There are moments in motherhood when you quietly wonder if all the prayers you whisper over your children truly make a difference. You’ve seen God answer prayers—sometimes in big ways, sometimes in quiet ones—but does it matter to them that you pray?
Recently, I asked all four of my children what it meant to them to know their mom prays for them regularly. Their answers surprised me, blessed me, and brought tears to my eyes. Each one said something different. Not one response was the same.
I want to share their precious words with you as encouragement—because your prayers matter more than you think.
What My Children Say Prayer Gives Them
Prayer gives them a sense of peace.
Praying for them provides a role model of prayer.
Prayer gives them a sense of protection.
Prayer gives them a sense of hope.
Prayer provides stability in their lives.
Prayer makes them feel loved.
Prayer reassures them that the choices they are making will lead them down the right path.
Prayer helps them to find joy in everything.
Prayer gives them strength to know they can take on whatever life throws at them.
Prayer lets them know they aren’t alone in their journey in life.
Prayer lets them know they have your support.
Prayer gives them confidence.
And then there is the response from my oldest—one I knew would arrive in the form of its own article. I cannot say it any better than he did, so here are his words:
From My Oldest Son
“Life includes some strange turns. Some clearly marked with signs, others sharp and quick to avoid the tree that’s fallen in the rain. What makes navigating these roads easier, aside from Google maps of course, is the strength that comes from family. Be it blood or experience, family is shaped by many things. However, at the core of family is love.
Some show love by telling you the truth, even when you don’t want to hear it. Others by going to bat for you, right or wrong. I’m sure we all have that one person, or more, that will always answer the phone for whatever it is we might need that particular 2am.
Mom, you pray. It’s not that you don’t fulfill a couple of those other roles either. I have never questioned your multi-tasking ability! But you pray. Supporting your family with a love rooted in faith. And when I’m driving down that dark road in the rain, the tree is falling in front of me, all I can do is swerve. Falling back on faith. Your prayers are love. Your prayers are strength. Easily appreciated when times are good, essential on those dark, rainy roads.”
So… Do Your Prayers Matter?
The answer is a resounding yes.
What struck me most was that not one of my children mentioned answered prayers. What mattered to them was simply knowing they were prayed for. That knowledge alone made all the difference.
Your prayers give your children a distinct spiritual advantage—opening space for the Holy Spirit to work, guide, protect, and shape their hearts.
