The Two Most Important Decisions Your Child Will Make — Part Two

2 Corinthians 6:14 — “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?”

This topic can feel tender, even among believers. For years, I was adamant that my children would marry people who shared our faith. But what happens when our children don’t yet believe as we do? What then? Do we stop praying? Assume God didn’t hear us? Wonder if hope has run out?

Hope never runs out in Christ.

I’ve prayed for my children’s future spouses since they were babies, asking God to prepare someone who would be a blessing and a partner in righteousness. Today, all four of my children are married, and God has answered those prayers in ways I never expected. Each of them has a spouse who fits them beautifully, and watching their marriages grow has been a testimony to God’s faithfulness. Some married their high‑school sweethearts, others met their spouses later, but every story has carried God’s fingerprints. They are equally yoked in ways that make sense for who they are, where they are, and how God is shaping their lives.

This is why this message is Part Two. Ideally, Part One—your child’s relationship with Christ—comes first, because God’s way is always the best way. But if it hasn’t happened yet, take heart. God is bigger than every unknown, every delay, and every detour. He hears every prayer, even when the answers look different than what we imagined.

There is always hope. There is always joy.

So today, let’s pray over our children and the spouses God has prepared for them. May their marriages be strengthened, unified, and filled with grace. And may each couple walk together in a way that reflects God’s goodness—fully and beautifully yoked as one.
